Appleton Wisconsin is Marketing Everywhere, Even the Bathroom

I’ve got two kudos for Fox Valley Technical College this week. I enjoyed this ad on the back of their magazine. The social media invite is a great way to get people to interact with their brand. So much better than a generic request to “Like us on Facebook.”

Waiting to meet with a representative from FVTC I sat in a room at the business center which offers classes on… you guessed it… entrepreneurship. Instead of decorating all the walls with art, someone took advantage of the space and (occasionally captive) audiences by highlighting the purpose of the room. The wall opposite had framed letters from students who had gone through the FVTC programs and found success. There was another frame simply showcasing business cards of students.

Marketing everywhere? Even the bathroom? No, I don’t mean those placards on the back of the stall door. Although, they certainly count. In my opinion the best marketing is communication that doesn’t look like marketing or advertising. And you know me… I like to take pictures wherever I see good marketing.

I stopped at a Citgo station, the Northsider in Appleton. I had to snap this picture in the restroom. Don’t most little girls grow up wanting to be the fairest of them all? And who wouldn’t want a favorable association with a gas station bathroom?

What have you done “out of the box” to be memorable and communicate with your audience? Please share in the comments below. Or if you know what it says in the men's room at the Northsider... I'm curious about that, too!

Funnel Marketing and the KISS Method

The future of websites is simplicity. Sure, flash had its day and we like how interactive we can be with brands. We follow everyday brands on Twitter and Like all our favorite mom and pop shops on Facebook. But when you go to a website, or better yet, when someone visits your website. What are they there to do? Can you narrow it down to a few reasons?

Navigation

When I do website reviews I always check for ease of use. Your navigation cannot be overlooked. The smallest of copy is often the most essential. Is your navigation intuitive? Does it address why visitors came to your site?

KISS

Keep it simple, stupid. A simple homepage design is best! If you’re looking to generate leads from your site (funnel marketing) make it easy. Have three or four big, easy-to-read (and click on) buttons that address the top reasons people visit your site. You also need an opt-in for your newsletter and a “few” social media buttons.

From the primary buttons on your homepage, viewers should go deeper into your site with the objective of funneling them closer to a purchase (more content within). Your calls to action should match the level the user is at. Are you giving something away, asking for contact info, or asking them to contact you?

What’s your favorite simple website design? Please share in the comments below. If you’d like a website review please email terra(at)fletcherfreelance(dot)com.

Alternative Marketing that Captures Attention

Many of my regular readers seem to appreciate my Ad Reviews. Today’s features too are marketing communications in their own right. This week enjoy the subtle marketing changes or techniques that made these products winners on my list.

Justin Case

Wandering aisles of camping supplies this attractive, and well named emergency kit caught my eye. (I always thought Justin Case would be a great name for a boy.) The alternative to the hard plastic box warms up the look of this emergency case and I like the red color, which is readily associated with emergencies (think, emergency vehicles, colors of flashing lights, and medical id bracelets).

Postcard

Here is a brief promotion in my local chamber of commerce’s monthly newsletter. What a great idea! The Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce has found a way to grow the numbers of tourists to the area, help local businesses, and remind us all the power of the handwritten word. Kudos!

I’ve already sent my postcard to a relative who doesn’t visit often enough. And I might have to call or stop over to get more of these. The postcard, if you were wondering, has a picture of the chamber building which is very attractive and features a 24-hour vestibule with area info. (That reminds me, I should make sure my marketing materials are current and being displayed prominently).

Fast Flats

If you know me, you know I can’t get enough shoes. I think at last count there were over 45 pairs in my collection. After completing my first triathlon today (yay me!) I’m rewarding myself with a new pair of running shoes (I earned ‘em). But these fast flats caught my eye because I can truly relate. Ladies, we wear those high heels because they look good, but at the end of the day or end of the night, it’s time to save our feet, backs, and knees. Fast flats come with a gold carrying case. That simple addition of a carrying case makes the thought of “I should bring flats for later” a reality. Awesome!

Would you buy these products (or send the postcard)? Please share in the comments below. Have an ad you’d like reviewed? Please email it to terra(at)fletcherfreelance(dot)com. And if you enjoy this blog, please share it on your favorite social network. Thanks!
